Are IT and Telecom Channels Merging?
November 19, 2012
For quite some time, telecommunications and IT were two areas of technology that kept their businesses separate. As we progress towards a predominantly cloud environment, this phenomenon is becoming less true, as the two channels are moving closer together to take advantage of the growing cloud computing and mobile boom.
For value added resellers (VARs), this means selling IT services in addition to telco services in an effort to keep up with the competition. The adoption rates of IT and communication infrastructures are increasing at rather rapid rates, a move that suggests businesses in the playing field do not want to miss out on the market.
Earlier this year at the Fall 2012 Channel Partners Conference & Expo in Orlando, Fla, this was a much talked about topic.
“Some VARs are looking to become the cloud provider whether white-labeling or adding their own level of services," said Greg Praske, founder and CEO of ARG Inc., a voice and data consulting agency, according to Channel Partners. “Others are looking at how to optimize their business base, some how to get new customers. We’re finding more downstream those VARs are looking for someone to work with. To build it out is a process."
With the telecom in their arsenal, VARs have the ability to be a complete solutions provider. VAR's are rapidly heading over to Telarus, a telecom agent, because of its patented GeoQuote platform tool, which offers real-time carrier pricing, as well as advanced research features and branded proposals.
A typical challenge for agents in the field was being able to provide pricing for potential clients within a reasonable timeframe. GeoQuote has provided telecom agents and VARs the ability to find and compare telecommunications providers that offer a host of other services without taking days to do so.
GeoQuote takes into account products of value, including coaxial cable, business DSL, Data T1, local voice, data DS3, amongst other commodities. With the rapid merge of IT and telecom, this makes it easier for agents to price out available bundled services, allowing customers to take advantage of the integrated landscape.
